L’appel à la justice face au désir d’être plus homme.
L’apport de Louis - Joseph Lebret à la rédaction de Gaudium et spes

Il suo progetto teologico non può essere ridotto ad una concezione economica e sociale della giustizia. Di fronte all’accellerazione della storia, Lebret reinterpreta l’aspirazione umana al bene comune, pilastro della morale tomista, come aspirazione a essere più umani. Partendo da essa i redattori finiscono per lanciare un vibrante appello alla giustizia nel mondo intero. Questo approccio alla giustizia si fonda sulla spiritualità della carità concreta verso i più poveri, tipico dell’opera di Lebret, ma sempre necessaria ad una giusta ermeneutica della Gaudium et spes. Quarant’anni più tardi, è impensabile basare l’appello alla giustizia sui desideri umani, fragili e contraddittori, se le comunità credenti non fungono da testimoni viventi della giustizia.


Using the personal archives of Pierre Haubtmann, this article analyses the contribution of the French Dominican Louis-Joseph Lebret to Gaudium et spes. His theological approach cannot be reduced to a socio-economic idea of justice. Taking into account the ever quicker pace of events, Lebret re-interprets the aspiration of the human being to the common good, fundamental to Thomistic morals, as an aspiration to being more human, and in the end the final editors make use of this to launch their vibrant appeal to justice to the whole world. This approach to justice is supported by a spirituality of practical charity towards the poorest of the poor, typical of Lebret and necessary for a correct hermenuetical approach to Gaudium et spes. Forty years on, however, it is not realistic to base the call to justice on human desires, fragile and contradictory as they are, if Christian communities do not form living witnesses to justice.
