La sociologia critica di Sorokin, un inno d’amore alla sociologia

La tradizione sociologica ha un debito notevole con una delle figure più controverse nel panorama delle scienze sociali del ‘900. Pitirim Sorokin oltre ad essere stato maestro dei più eminenti sociologi statunitensi, riveste un’importanza centrale nell’elaborazione dei concetti fondamentali per lo studio della dinamica sociale e dei flussi sociali, per le ardite esperienze metodologiche e per l’elaborazione concettuale dei fenomeni caratteristici di intere epoche storiche; tentò inoltre di superare i confini delle ristrette analisi dei paradigmi conflittualisti e funzionalisti per aprire le pro- spettive di un nuovo sistema di analisi sociale fondato sull’esperienza profonda dei rapporti altruistici e dell’amore. Proprio per questo suo ardire, da “guru” delle scienze sociali finì isolato dal mondo accademico suo contemporaneo. Il suo peso nel progresso della sociologia rimane però inalterato e la sua capacità di analisi, lucida e inesorabile, rimane tra le più attuali. E’ questa sua passione a impressionare e ad alimentare il rigore scientifico che muove questo “gigante” in un atto d’amore verso la sociologia stessa.


The sociological tradition owes a great debt to one of the most controversial figures in the panorama of the social sciences of the 20th century. As well as being the master of some of the most eminent US sociologists, the thought of Pitirim Sorokin has been central in the elaboration of fundamental concepts for the study of social dynamics and flows, for important methodological developments and for the conceptual working out of the characteristic phenomena of whole historical epochs. Furthermore, Sorokin tried to overcome the limited analyses of the functionalist and conflict-based paradigms, so as to open up the possibility for a new system of social analysis founded on a profound experience of altruistic relationships and love. Precisely because of his ardour for this last project, from being a “guru” of the social sciences he ended up isolated from the contemporary academic world. The weight of his contribution, however, remains unchanged and his lucid and inexhaustible capacity for analysis remains as relevant as ever. It was indeed his passion for influencing and developing academic rigour that moved this “giant” through an act of love towards sociology itself.
